Being a bit of a moth, my initial attraction to science and engineering when I was at school was to find out about light. Now I investigate how we can live our modern life without destroying the planet. By developing solar energy products and new construction materials I give people the option of being progressive and protecting the planet or being old fashioned and helping to wreck it. The results of my work have far-reaching benefits and knowing that what I do is so useful really keeps me motivated.

I’m currently employed by Magnox North as an Assistant Maintenance Engineer at Trawsfynydd decommissioning site. I did a HNC in Electrical Engineering and then a HND in Electrical Engineering. I am currently studying for a Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and hope to be finished in 3 years time. Our department is responsible for the maintenance of equipment to comply with our nuclear site licence, project support and corrective maintenance. We have a variety of projects on site, ranging from robotic arms packing nuclear waste into drums to specially designed and constructed cranes lifting boiler sections weighing over 100 tons. No two days seem to be the same when on site, one day could consist of fault finding a robotic control system and another trying to find replacement parts for a machine designed and first used before 1970!

Have you thought about what being an engineer means? Excitement? Responsibility? Benefits? Fundamental scientific discoveries are of little use without the engineer to turn them into practical realities; realities that change the profitability of a business, the way we live and the world we live in. I come from Liverpool, but after studying chemical engineering I moved to South Wales to work for Dow Corning in Barry. My career has provided me with the chance to work in manufacturing, utilities and water treatment. My skills as an engineer have made it possible for me to take on a wide range of jobs. I’ve moved from operations to do economics for large projects and currently I have a role where I manage improvement projects across the whole business not just manufacturing. Engineering has provided me with a well-paid and varied career and I have always enjoyed going to work and taking on the new challenges.

I started at Corus at 16 as an apprentice. Whilst carrying out my apprenticeship I obtained various NVQs in Engineering Maintenance, City and Guilds (16th Edition, Inspection and Testing) an ONC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and HNC in Mechatronics. Corus then sponsored me to study an Electrical/Electronic Engineering Degree, returning to work for them during the summer months. I currently work as an Energy Utilisation Engineer at the Energy Department at Port Talbot Works. I recently completed a part time MSc in Power Distribution and am looking to gain Chartership status by the end of this year. I believe that the apprenticeship has given me an all excellent experience that will never be felt by those who have only been to university, and it also makes him a better all round engineer.

My personal experiences include working as a student bridge engineer on projects ranging from a local historical bridge refurbishment project in Cardiff to a landmark bridge in my home town of Poole in Dorset. With numerous other interesting smaller projects, some based outside the UK all contributing to my love of a great subject. I also include in my experiences my academic studies which will quite possibly be the best years of my life where I got to meet so many great friends who I am sure will be lifelong friends. I will highlight that there is a broad spectrum of avenues to take in engineering which do not necessarily have to be in industry as there are very exciting and rewarding opportunities in cutting edge research as well.

When I was young my hobbies were messing around with lawn mowers and motorbikes, stripping them down and re-building them. I had an idea to become a mechanic, but the problem was that I wanted to do more than just fix things. So I began a Performing Engineering Operations course at college and this led to an apprenticeship with Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited and a one-day-a-week placement at Coleg Menai. I began my training in the main workshops, After 6 months I was sent out on site fitting the gearboxes pumps and cylinders I had overhauled in the workshop. During my time I was given a chance to work in all the sites departments which gave me a varied range of experiences. During my apprenticeship I won 5 awards, the last one being EEF Apprentice of the Year for Wales. I am now employed full-time by Anglesey Aluminium Metal Limited as a Mechanical Craft person.
