Working in Industry
"Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand."
- Chinese Proverb
It’s all very well learning stuff on your course, but you want to know what it’s really like working in industry, right? And you want to get paid while you’re getting the experience!
Well, if you're a further education student in Northern Ireland we can help. Engineers Make It Happen has joined forces with The Nuffield Foundation (which has over ten years experience of this sort of thing) to offer you placements at local engineering companies for between four and six weeks over your summer holiday. We’ll pay you a weekly wage and we’ve got people who’ll support you to help you fit right in and quickly become a useful member of the team. Because that’s what working in industry is all about – teamwork and being able to get things done off your own bat without being told everything by a teacher.
Five students completed placements in summer 2008 and twelve in summer 2009. We plan to offer fifteen placements in summer 2010.
If you're interested in taking part in summer 2010, you can find out about the scheme without making any commitment on The Nuffield website or by downloading the scheme's student information . The call for applicants for summer 2010 will be made in December 2009.
